There were a few things that got muddy this year, and we have already been discussing solutions for next year. I think this is an issue that will need to be addressed sometime in the near future, as the wording was followed explicitly even if the wording was not what the other staff had intended.

We staff members are already taking notes as to how we can improve next year’s competition, and many of your suggestions are ideas we are tossing around. ;) We just can’t change the conditions of the competition after it has already started.

  • Selling my bleepbloop ($70), drag’n’derp ($85), and old EMS carts (with GB Transferrer II, make me an offer), message me if you want to work out an exchange.

    • Forgot to mention – Nanoloop 1.6 cart, $30

    • is the nanoloop gba or color/dmg?
also, whats kind of an ideal price range for the carts and gb transferrer? or just for the transferrer alone, i need one.

      • Transferrer, Bleep Bloop, and DnD are spoken for. Nanoloop 1.6 is for DMG (but works up to GBA SP of course). You can see what vendors sell the carts for as well as how my prices are competitive given the unavailability of all the items except the DnD if you do a search on this forum, chipmusic.org, ebay, as well as the main chiptune/hobbyist…[Read more]

    • Alright, if I can get $30 before it’s gone i need a nanoloop cart. And believe me I know, haha.

    • This is an absolutely phenomenal article, particularly with the run up to the LSDJ Showdown. Well done on this Bitman, this is absolute essential reading for new and old artists! :D

    • brilliant

    • T-Rexcellent!

    • This has been really good so far, and it’s very well written. However, I only got up to this point and then found a sentence fragment: ”Whatever your implementation of a kick is, how an actual kick drum makes noise and how you can best replicate the kick in LSDJ using commands.”

    • okay, this has been a really good read. I look forward the ones that go more in depth into theory and stuff. I also like to use noise kicks as much as possible, since that’s what I grew up hearing in video games, haha. The only criticism I have is that it’s a bit hard to read the commands when they are given in such a disjointed way. It could…[Read more]

    • Nice article! My only gripe is that I believe Q represents resonance, not distortion. While it’s probably not a big worry, I think it’ll make understanding the WAV channel a bit easier for people who know their way around a synthesizer but aren’t as familiar with LSDJ.

      • You’re correct, Q represents resonance. The higher the Q value, the more resonance you have on the wave. The cutoff value affects the frequency at which the resonance occurs.

        • Derp, shall fix. Half of this was written when I thought I was dreaming after I fell asleep with my laptop in my lap.

    • Hooray! Especially since I am not planning on writing a new article until I finish my album and maybe take a lil LSDJ break!

      • That’s fine, I have been on one all semester. It has been nearly a year since a ”LSDJ & You” article was made. I plan on exploring sound design theory and ear training. I’ll keep LSDJ teaching in the great state of Alabama a while longer :p

        • hope you can tell us how to tune notes to just tuning and solfeggio frequencies. indian music is sort of cool too. is a 19 tone scale possible (not equal temperment…)

          • You can create instruments in the Pulse channel and detune them using the detune command, also possible with very extreme V commands (try something like F4 to see what I mean). In the WAV channel something similar is possible with vibrato as well as awful combinations of distortion, filters, and cutoff ;)

The note will be a D6, and about 15 cents sharp if you check the tuning with a smartphone app or an app tuner.

I know kitsch has been working on the screen replacements and front PCB’s for the longest time. These would cut down on the kinds of caps/etc needed to “refurbish” original DMGs and take care of the LCD issue entirely. Like you said, the CPU and the ethics behind it are the real hangup.
