If you want to throw an ending up on it, I can wait, there’s no big hurry to send it off. An EP sounds like a fun idea if you can find a few other people to team up with.

(Actually already heard nexus on SC, it’s one of my fave tunes I’ve heard you and groove work on.)

Greetings Jredd,

I know I’m a little late in the game here, but this collab board seems like a lot of fun, and I’m very interested in learning how to track and express my musical ideas more efficiently. Learning how to use VGM Music Maker seems like a good start. I like Genesis sounding music, and pretty much know the basics of how it works now. Infact, I recently found a copy of VGM Music Maker 1.1 and started playing with it.

I want to know if I can send you a tune I created in Deflemask first and see what you think. I want to work on it a little more in a few days and post it then. I’m open to ideas, criticisms, and changes. I was asking ahead of time because it seems it’s not your preferred tracker and didn’t want to be imposing on a board started for VGMMM collab. If you prefer not, I could just come up with something else in VGM Musicmaker that we might be able to work on. I find VGMMM to be more intuitive and user friendly when fabricating instruments, but I like both of these trackers for different reasons.

I’m also posting to say that I thought your original Vector Nova album was really cool. It really captures the early 90′s Mega Drive space shooter with a little modern flare. I especially liked how you rythmically integrated the menu screen selection sound effects with the spacecraft selection tune and the “good choice”/”get ready” samples; makes me smile every time I hear it. :)

My favorite tracks are that one along with Level 1 and Level 5 Hyperdrive. Level 1 sounds almost like a real hard metal guitar blaring the bass line and Hyperdrive has a nostalgic action thing going on that sounds perfect for the genre. Very creative stuff here. I wish I could integrate the sound track with a megadrive version of Galaxy Force II. Vector Nova sounds like it should back a 3-D 16bit space shooter like that. I thought Groovemaster 303′s remix was a nice take, but I still prefer the original.

Here’s another idea I had. How about doing an orchestra like piece with fading instruments playing quietly in the background, timpani drums, and multiple movements. Beyond Oasis for the Genesis had some interesting music crafted in this fashion, and I think we could make something even better with the more efficient tools we have now… just a thought. I might submit a template melodic piece for this idea sometime. I could then make a more realistic sounding version with a more advanced DAW I have using MIDI porting.

Thanks for your consideration.

Oh wow! Oops, I hadn’t checked back on this thread in a little while. Sorry for the late reply. Even though this is a thread for VGMM I am a little interested in Deflemask not so much for it’s genesis support but because it emulates other systems as well. Maybe I can pick your brain about it sometime and learn the basics of it from you :) . I find so far that because VGMM is specifically for Genesis only, and has a much easier way to put custom samples in it that it’s the tracker I prefer for Sega stuff.

Also, I tried to download deflemask once and I am not sure what happened but my antivirus program didn’t seem to like it or something. I’m sure it’s probably fine though. I haven’t really heard of any bad things happening because of it from others so I’ll probably try getting it again some other time :P . I want to make things with the game boy and TG16 chip so yeah. If I can learn something about how to use it from you It would be awesome :P .

As far as for this thread, I’d prefer doing something in VGMM because I have become pretty good with it and I’d like to help others do the same :) .

Also, thanks so much for your kind comments on Vector Nova. It’s neat that I am still finding out more people who enjoyed that album from time to time, and it inspires me to want to do another one :D .

I have been toying with the idea of an RPG styled album and you might just be the perfect person to help us with that :) . As far as deflemask goes, it’s not quite what I was going for in this thread but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to pick your brain and learn from you about it sometime :) .

If you get an idea for an rpg track in VGMM though, by all means throw it up here. I’d love to add to it ha ha. Keep me posted man :D .

Hi Jredd,

Thanks for the response.

RPG style is not my first thought, but it does sound like fun. I’m cooking up a main theme, castle themes, overworld tunes, and lost high tech civilization dungeon tunes in my head. There’s stuff going on now, so I won’t be able to transcribe it to VGMMM for a few days still yet, but I am open to the RPG idea!

As far as Deflemask, it’s not the most user friendly interface, but it is improving with every update. I think it will get there. Delek is real passionate about perfecting his software. I’ve had zero problems with viruses for the many months I’ve been using it, and if you’re well versed with VGMMM, then you should have no problem with Deflemask. The TG16 emulation sounds great. One of their demos sounds very similar to BONK. :)

You are able to use TFM instruments along with .y12 formats for the Genesis/MegaDrive tracking, so you would at least be able to use your VGMMM instruments in there. I plan on sending you that sample I made in Deflemask soon.

Still, I think VGMMM is growing on me mainly because of the way it handles samples, it’s instrument editor, and that it displays some kind of BPM reading when you adjust the speed settings. I can certainly start some RPG style tunes in a few days. I’m thinking a cool title might be Warriors of Valiante or something like that (Valiante being the name of the overworld where the game would theoretically take place, also referring to their benevolent character). I hope there’s not some other game named that, I don’t want any copyright issues. :)

Just a thought… I’ll get back to ya!

Thanks,
marcb0t

Oh! No worries. Whatever style comes naturally to you I can work with. It’s just one of many ideas floating around in my head. Whatever comes out when you compose man, let it flow. A lot of times it’s a blending of ideas and such that makes collaborations so cool.

You keep hammering out ideas in your head and when you’ve got something feel free to post it. I’m looking forward to this :) .

Hi Jredd,

Some unexpected things have come up lately, and yet there will be more delays. However, I am uploading this Deflemask tune I made for the Genesis chipset. It sounds like something for a menu screen, and blends styles and instruments from different Genesis games.

You are free to look at it, pick it apart, disect it, edit it… whatever you like. This is for your research purposes and listening pleasure. Although, I still plan to edit and improve it in the future. I call the song “Central Command” because it reminds me of when you walk into the space ship at the beginning of Zillion for the Master System, and a bunch of other menu screens and command base themes from various other games. :)

I’m pretty sure you know, but just in case, the file has to be in a pretty specific directory in order to open it up in Deflemask. There is a Genesis Module directory you’ll have to navigate to in which you drop the file. I think Delek is working on a way to have custom directories in the future, but this is how it works for now.

I still plan on making some RPG style tunes in VGMMM, but I hope you enjoy this for now.

Sincerely,
marcb0t

[EDIT: Jrred, the file is not uploading through this board, so I will have to upload it to dropbox and post the link later today. My apologies.]

Hi Jredd,

Here is a VGMMM module I’ve been working on.
http://db.tt/dOQSwTBF

I take it this would be the main theme for an RPG style game like an overworld tune that can be adapted for a title screen as well. (I came up with this tune back in 2009 in my head).

It’s still unfinished (like I have much more to the melody, and a couple of movements or so to add).

Feel free to tweak the instruments, drums, or track some musical transition/melody ideas.

I have an idea on how I want to finish the song, but I’m definitely open to ideas and suggestions with where it goes.

Enjoy,

marcb0t

Wow man, that’s pretty damn cool! There was a tiny glitch in it where one of the patterns was 49 and it hiccuped just a tad so I tweaked that…ummmm. The reason it took me so long to reply is because groove and I were working on an rpg song of our own. Kind of an overworld type of thing :D .

http://soundcloud.com/jredd/onward

But yeah, what you’ve got going on here is awesome. Sound great for like an epic title sequence or something. I’ll have to get to work on this one. Oh, and let me know what you think of this tune here we did. If you want the file to look over I can put it up too. We’re pretty much done with it, but if you have some kind of idea I’d be glad to share the file :D .

Hi Jredd,

Thanks for the feedback. Here is an updated version I tweaked on Saturday.

http://db.tt/UavwZxTI

I knew you would catch the time sig glitch. I did that intentionally, but then fixed it and found a better way to do that twinkly transition before I saw your post. :) Thanks, though. I added more to the melody, and more harmonics to the horns.

Do you know how to get some really good string sounds on the 2612 chipset? Something like violin/cello sections, violas, and things of that nature. All the presets I’ve found in TFM seem a bit cheesy, or just fall short, but I suspect there still might be a way. Any games you could point to that I could rip the instruments from maybe?

Otherwise, I’m just going to record strings in a DAW and then add it to the DAC table in the song (gotta have my strings :D ). I found a pretty convincing harp sound which I’ll be adding later. I’ll probably use DAC harp glissando as well, and plan to add orchestral bass and timpani drums.

I listened to the Onward overworld theme music. Very nice! It sounds very fitting for an epic RPG game, and it’s definitely your free flowing melodic style. Your really branching out nicely here, and I do like the classic use of the PSG. Would you be able to send me the presets for the horns, the white noise snare drum (which I really would like to use in the maintheme), and the bass? I think I might want to use those when constructing enemy fight encounters, victories, losses, etc.

I have ideas for hotels, church themes, towns, even lost bio-tech factories (ala Phantasy Star 2 and 4), and so forth that I plan to work on. Progress may be a little slow at times, especially later in November, but it is a fun little project that I’m enjoying so far.

Thanks again,
marcb0t

Hi Jredd,

Here is a happy old-timey rag tune I made this afternoon:
http://db.tt/ffhxm9kV

I think of a hotel, shop, or minigame. Perhaps even an upbeat menuscreen depending on your preference.

I heard this melody from a player piano years ago at the Old Strand Emporium on Galveston Island. (Really good sandwiches by the way :D )

I don’t know the whole melody after it repeats, so feel free to improvise and go crazy on it! I’ll be tinkering with it too. Such a fun diddy to work on! I used the PSG to make it sound like a detuned piano.

I hope you enjoy.

Sincerely,
marcb0t

Ha ha that old time piano theme is awesome. I might have a piano sound to try here that could add a bit of a different sound here :) . I’m going to try it out.

On second thought, tried the instrument swap and I think I like your piano better, Mine might work with the bass notes though…hmmm :)

Hi Jredd,

Here’s my latest progress on the rag-tune: http://db.tt/AO9pch8i

You know, a better bass sound using only one channel would be most helpful. Especially if it still sounds piano-ish. That way I can easily add more harmonic tones to the lead melody.

Also, I am working on an enemy encounter/fight theme, and will also be starting a church and town theme soon. Then I’ll get back to work on the main theme (I needed a little break from it for awhile).

What have you and Groovemaster 303 been up to lately?

Take care,
marcb0t

Ha ha ha, wow that’s cool! Sorry dude, I just now checked this out. It’s awesome. As far as what Groove is up to, I have no idea. However I’ve been attempting to up my FM sound design so I’ve been only limiting myself to 6 FM channels. No samples, and no psg. Have a listen to some of the things I’ve been able to accomplish :) .

http://soundcloud.com/jredd/fm-strut

http://soundcloud.com/jredd/funk-chunk

http://soundcloud.com/jredd/blip-hop-loader

The hardest part is probably getting good FM drums, but when I manage to perfect it I figure it’ll leave the sample channel open for all kinds of madness when I go back to using all of VGMM :) .

What inspired me to limit myself to 6 FM channels? Mainly this guy :D . He just put up a new one too. http://ucollective.org/audio/Tomy/prettypretty+ym2612/

That’s what I’ve been up to :) . Groove, I have no idea. I need to shoot him an e-mail or bug him on facebook and see what he’s up to :P .

So uhhh..back to the RPG thing. I caught up with groovemaster303, he’s been super busy but we took your old emporium track and uhh…well :P . We did something to it, I like it somehow but I am pretty sure it’s not what you originally intended ha ha!

http://www.mediafire.com/?u422mnv0y0ybjd9

It sounds like a saloon but yet in an alien world, in space LOL. It’s all like “Yeah could I have a.. (We don’t serve your kind round’ these parts human!” and the bartender has 3 eyes ha ha ha. Yeah we’re nuts we know :P .

Greetings Jredd,

Wow! Now I haven’t been here for a looooong time!

I’m not able to download the modified Emporium tune yet, but the other tunes I’ll be listening to.

I think it’s a great idea to improve your FM skills in such a manner. I starting to do that myself by making drums with FM (or PSG) more and more.

This tune uses samples only for the snare and a couple of orchestral hits. The bass drums are FM only along with the hi-hats being PSG noise. It’s for an RPG enemy fight tune similar to a Phantasy Star 4 style. I don’t mind any tweaking you do… go nuts! I bet Groovemaster would also have fun tweaking it.

http://db.tt/uW6ufTTb

I imagine the screen pixelating out from the overworld with a swarm of mutant flies and creatures standing before the game characters with their HP bars. It’s an intense action packed, but threatening tune.

I’ll try to keep up more often. I have a little time each week that I can squeeze in music, but not much.

Catch ya later,
marc-B0t

Hi Jredd,

How’s it going there?

I took a listen to all the songs and the tweaked emporium file.

As for your FM only tunes… very nice and promising. FM Strut and Funk Chunk are my favorites. FM Strut would be great for an RPG abandoned lab (ala PSIV), and the drums are superb! Funk Chunk… the second melody to come in sounds excellent, and I would like to play with that instrument set sometime. It sounds like you chorused it, and it’s really cool and jazzy, almost like it’s no longer on a Genesis chip. The Blip hop one (in my opinion) needs the drums a little less intense. If that’s what you were going for, though, then it’s fine. I wasn’t sure. The chord transitions and the melody for Blip hop are really cool, though!

I would love to have the .vge files for all of these!

As for the Old Emporium tweak… no offense, but I prefer my original production. The tweaked one is charming, but I still favor the more grainy FM piano rag sound. I did like the pitch slide down you guys added that plays when the sound effects interlude, though :) The plucked string instrument made your mix sound more mellow like for a saloon scene which was kind of cool, too.

I don’t know… I need to add the finishing touches to it at some point, and we’ll see what to do from there.

As for the FM drums and making max usage of the YM 2612, I found some cool documentation. Check this out:

http://www.smspower.org/maxim/uploads/Documents/ym2612page7.png?sid=7204e7f3b89ef6944584a4b109a6dccd

According to this, both channels 3 and 6 on the chip could use the special mode where the 4 FM operators could be used as four separate virtual tone channels. I’ve read somewhere that using special mode with varying dissonant chords can be ideal for good drum sounds on the YM2612… food for thought!

I’m going to give this information to Delek so that maybe he can integrate dual special mode into Deflemask.

I’m thinking echo delay drums and echo delay virtual pads and harmonics with 4 real channels to spare!

I think you’re doing really well so far and your progress will be helpful to everyone interested in YM2612 production.

Take care,
marb0t
