Been talkin with Freque a lot lately, inspired me to maybe become more active here and hang out! WIth the demise of 8bc and other prospering forums like chipmusic and ucollective, what keeps your interest NoiseChannel?

What are some of your favorite things about NoiseChannel?
Gripes? Complaints? Things that could be better?
Things you’re looking forward to? Previous significant events?

i dunno talk to me (or not)

I think one of the things that surprises me about when people talk about noichan is that they genuinely don’t know about the functionality. People have said ‘it’s another forum’ – it’s not. It’s built on a community based framework that allows people to populate their own profile, not just upload songs. They can create their own content to share through video, photos and music. There’s been an absolute glut of micromusic made available. Articles on technique. Interviews. Competitions for actual tangible useful things. Webshows. The chat function that you can share retro music files through. The video chat so you can have impromptu streams with each other. We have a submission form for news so that users can update Facebook and the twitterverse is being handled expertly by betabot. That submission form goes out to thousands of people through these channels.

I wonder what noisechannel they’ve actually been visiting.

If you want a really good forum, or someone to rate your music, chipmusic and ucollective are good for that. But if you want all that good stuff above, which to me, is pretty much the future of how we use the internets, then I think we’re doing it pretty well and there’s still a shitload more to come.

I like the instant messaging and the chat room. I like the featured articles and news on the side bar (obviously, since I write a column.) I like the facebook-style activity feed.

And the thing I like most is the vibe is more positive than some other boards.

“I think the best feature about NoiseChannel is the sense of support & respect that we are willing to give anyone who is coming here with the sentiment of sharing their work. No matter if they started yesterday or if they have been around since the ‘pong’ days. This isn’t a self centered operation, a circle jerk, or a popularity contest.
We’ve always maintained a widespread sense of positivity & enthusiasm throughout the site, & everytime there’s feedback, we take it with a very open mind knowing is someone’s suggestion to make our community improve.”

—- this, absolutely. I only got into making chiptunes last year, and decided to get involved in the community right when 8bc went down. I looked around at all the new community bases setting up and settled on NoiChan for exactly that reason. I started finding these artists that I like, and lo and behold, here they are on NoiChan. Guys that I consider to be heroes in the chip scene are active, friendly, approachable. I wasn’t getting that vibe from other chipscene sites so I settled on here and only here.

That said, I have some comments:

The columns are cool, LSDJ and You is great, Powerplayer series is great. Maybe some more of that? Not on technical stuff necessarily, even just a weekly pulse check… “This week, these albums came out, these events happened, these columns”, etc.

Webshows are awesome but Ustream is a shit show. We should consider what it would take to be able to do those right off NoiChan, that guests can watch too. Video chat w/ room leader function that would allow you to set one person at a time as the performer to be featured in a bigger screen. Everyone is queued up, video chat ready, we just have to switch the next guy over to room leader instead of changing rooms. Bonus, guests coming to watch a webshow can just go straight to the show and watch, but at the same time they are connecting to NoiChan, not our individual Ustream channels. They have a chance to look at the site and check it out.

^This may require us to consider the costs of getting NoiChan capable of doing something like this.
^This may require people willing to make donations, or we could do another NoiChan comp, but sell it and use proceeds for upgrades.

<3 NoiChan, want to see it succeed, willing to help.

Hey! That’s a good idea. We could even break that up into a weekly album round-up, and a weekly news update. I think we should implement that. It would kind of fill a bit of the TCTD void. I’ll start a weekly (say, Friday) noichan album thing. Yeah?

I will definitely say: do this. The info exists, just not in a compact form presently.

Awesome idea!
idk about weekly, sounds like a serious amount of commitment (O_O)
Awesome idea all around!
& also I should put it out there for all of NoiChan members, that if you want to become a NoiChan News writer for your local community/regional/worldwide, hit Freque up & let him know you want to get involved!

Well, I’m not suggesting anything like actual reviews of releases. Just a list with links and maybe a one line blurb, i.e. “happy Amiga music”, or “LSDJ EDM”.

We could make it easier and involve the whole staff. Just start a draft post at the beginning of the week and ask people to add any releases they see to it as the week goes on, then post at the end of the week.

That sounds perfect. A week in chiptune, on a Friday it is then.

This sounds like a great thing, the roundup.

An0va- chat used to pop out, needs fixing.

Something else I am thinking of is drawing attention to items on-sale on the popular GB supply shops (apeshit, kitsch, etc) and doing streams on NoiChan for group modding nights. Of course, people will have to be told in advance, etc, but it would be cool to do and get some people who are afraid of modding to come out of their shells.

In the vein of modding videos, I think it would be great to make a real mod/tutorial wiki, seeing as no site has any organized/all-inclusive modding page/wiki. It could cut down on basic noob questions. FYI I’d be willing to work on this once I let out my new release later this month, seeing as I have time to write articles, a great camera, some good modding experience, and money to finance part sourcing.

If I can expand on the weekly item idea, I’d like to see something like a “Song of the week” thing. Be it from here or elsewhere, since there’s a lot of single songs put out that aren’t part of an apporaching ep. Just a short article on the song and where you can find more of that persons stuff if people are into it, and it can be a good way to fill a gap if there’s no new releases.

Is it okay to bump this?

I NoiChan because noichan is a cool place with cool people, a cool radio show, cool articles AND an interesting format. As opposed to people mentioned earlier, I didn’t even realize there was a forum. I basically joined because I figured I should join all the main chip places rather than just sticking to one. The chatbox is cool, too. I like to pop in every so often and see who’s logged in to chat.

I don’t really understand what manner of beast noichan is, but I plan to stick around and find out. It’s a lot more powerful than it looked at first glance.

Edit: It’s also way more cozy than I had imagined.

Bump away. This is partially our own fault, because we never really talked about what you could do with noichan. It simply sits there. Let me give you a bit of a background behind the whole thing.

In the very early days of making noisechannel, there was just an idea. Freque talked to me about how there were plenty of sites for chip, but not enough functionality. We talked about format and I suggested a CMS system, simply because the amount of power we could wield with open source. The irony of course is that to do some of the things we wanted, took Freque thousands of hours of coding and like a beast he tore away code and re-introduced it again to give some seamless functionality. We had a groups based system initially, but everyone wanted a forum, so…..we introduced a forum too. When the doors opened, people said ‘it’s ugly’ which was….kind of odd for us because it felt like driving a ferrari and going ‘hey this is great but do you have it in blue?’ but eventually over time a lot of the formatting was re-written and we to to where we are now.

Anyway, there are a lot of tools people are unaware of. You can hold your own private chat rooms, share files, video chat, make forum topics, upload mp3s and images, submit albums and news and even ‘Like’ the things you’re interested in. We’re currently running the now famous LSDJ Showdown and have held fundraisers which have put hundreds of dollars of tech into artists hands. We have written articles and we note points of interest too.

All we ask is that you enjoy and use the site. ^_^

Oh we are not connected to the radio show….that is an unfortunate naming scenario,

Yeah, I kinda like discovering all the nooks and crannies that NoiChan has. What really attracted me to NoiChan was how much character it has. The ever changing banners, the LSDJ showdown, the “news feed”… everything. A very unique yet community oriented site :)

I’m pretty sure that this site existed for a while before the radio show, it’s not ideal. However, a podcast/radioshow might be something we should start… with a cooler non-affiliated “noisechannel” sort of name. ;)
